VIDEO ON DEMAND – May 2010

While we’ve known for quite some time that a routine post alerting you to what’s available through the ever expanding list of Video On Demand channels has been long overdue, it s been really hard for me personally to wrap my brain around how to best address this situation. In calendar form? By distributor? By viewing format (online, television, etc.)? Though I still have no solid plan of attack, I figured I should just suck it up and take the plunge, hoping that an effective approach will emerge sooner than later.

Obviously, this list is by no means complete. If you are a member of the VOD industry in some way, shape, or form, and aren’t mentioned below, please write us at CLINK-AT-HAMMERTONAIL-DOT-COM to let us know what you’re up to and what your most up-to-date crop of titles is looking like. The hope is to post this report the first week of every month. Ultimately, we want this to be a curated situation as opposed to an indexed one, but this month, we’re including some titles we haven’t seen but are of interest.

The following titles are available through IFC’s In Theaters + On Demand channel:

There are also many more releases to be found on IFC Festival Direct. Surprisingly, I don’t recognize most of them—you’re shattering my nerd credibility, IFC!—but I can personally recommend the following: Night and Day, I’m Gonna Explode, Medicine For Melancholy, Goliath, and The Overbrook Brothers. In the future, I hope to get our eyes on as many upcoming titles as possible to give a more informed opinion about them and let you know which are must-sees.

Magnolia Pictures

Survival of the Dead (Pre-theatrical rental at Amazon now; opens theatrically 5/28)
The Good Heart (On Demand and In Theaters)
The Eclipse (Amazon VOD)
Ondine (VOD, XBox Live, Playstation, Amazon, Vudu 5/7; opens theatrically 6/4)

Time Warner/Comcast Cable On Demand

New Movies: The Messenger, The Hurt Locker, Fantastic Mr. Fox

Tribeca Film Festival: The Immaculate Conception of Little Dizzle, The Trotsky (and many more)

HBO On Demand

Movies: Observe and Report (BE SURE TO STAY AWAY FROM The Happening and Revolutionary Road!!!)

Documentaries: Rough Aunties, Sergio, Boy Interrupted

Cinemax On Demand

Some Movie Picks: In Dreams, Milk, Raging Bull, Sleep Dealer

That does it for this month. Please, please, please be sure to contact us with any relevant information that will help this monthly post to become a helpful one-stop VOD shop. Any thoughts and suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
